About UFMG

A group of patriots, the “Inconfidentes,” who rebelled against Portuguese domination, conceived of the idea of a university in the state of Minas Gerais, which was founded as the Universidade de Minas Gerais (UMG) in 1927. The state-subsidized private institution brought together the four institutions of higher learning that existed in Belo Horizonte. UMG remained within the state system until 1949, when it was federalized.
The present name – Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG) – was not adopted until 1965.When the university was federalized, the Schools of Architecture, Philosophy, and Economics had already been integrated into UFMG.

In 1968, the organization of UFMG was reformed, which resulted in the division of the old School of Philosophy into various schools and institutes. Thus, the present School of Philosophy and Human Sciences, the Institutes of Biological Sciences and Exact Sciences, the Institute of Geo-Sciences, and the Schools of Letters and Education appeared.

Today, firmly established as a model of excellence for the rest of the country, UFMG continues to expand. Agronomy (in Montes Claros), Drama, Control and Automation, Computational Mathematics, Audiology and Speech Pathology, and Nutrition have been added in the last five years, bringing the total of courses offered at the undergraduate level to 48.

The adjustment of perspectives is essentia in linguistic exchanges. Speakers find in the language a conceptual apparatus (demonstratives and indexicals, but also tenses and modal aspects) that provides implicitly, that is, int the rules, and not explicitly represented, the tools for such adjustment. At least part of this apparatus also helps explaining intra-personal adjustments fo perspectives on situations, in what is called, after Kaplan, congnitive dynamics. There are common features of inter-personal and intra-personal linguistic devices that help retaining and expressing the same thought across different situations. The different perspectives peoples may take a situations also appear in attitude ascriptions – the distinction between de dicto and de re belief ascriptions (at leas in one sense of this distinction) can be understood as the speaker taking account or not of the perspective te subject to which the attidtude is ascribed has on the situation. Speakers express their understanding that different people may see the same situation in different ways.

However, neither mutual adjustment of perspectives nor intra-personal cognitive dynamics depend on mastering the appropriate linguistic devices. The very acquistion of language builds on the understanding of different perspectives on a situation, as it is the case in episodes of joint attention. More generally, joint actions are not exclusively linguistically coordinated, and they depend on the mutual acknowledgement of each other’s perspective. In a similar vein, we do not need to know (at least not always) the linguistic devices to keep our cognitive lives updated – as Perry says, the character of beliefs are “analogous to but not derived from” the character of sentences.

The expression of different perspectives areis not restricted to intra-sentential devices. Sentential operators can also be seen as indicating perspectives freom which sentences should be evaluated. One may also think that propositions themselves receive their truth-vales according to the circumstance of evaluation – such as Prior’s tensed propositios, an, recently, the different varieties of truth-relativism concerning, for example, tast predicates, knowledge assessments or future contingents. In this approach, truth turns out to be a perspectival notion.

We wish to address some questions that arise about these issues, such as the nature of sentential and sub-sentential perspectival features of language and the relation between the formal perspecital apparatus and our non linguistic capacity to adjustment of perspectives. From a linguistic perspective, we wish to discuss how different grammatical and linguistic resources, for instance, verbal arguments saturation, reference resolution, and choice of referential form, are related to discursive and pragmatic integration.
